Learn About SRD Status Check Response
While checking your grant approval status, you will see different kinds of status check codes. A SASSA grant beneficiary needs to know the meaning of these responses. So here is the detailed explanation of each status check response.
SASSA Pending Status:
If you see a “Pending” status while checking your SASSA grant approval, it means that your SRD R370 application has been submitted successfully and is currently undergoing verification. This status indicates that SASSA is reviewing your details to ensure everything is correct before proceeding with your grant approval.
In this case, you need to be patient as the verification process can take some time. SASSA will contact you once your application is fully processed or if any additional information is required.
It’s important to check the status regularly, but for now, all you can do is wait until the verification process is complete.
SASSA Status Check Declined:
This status check response is about the rejection of the Social Distress grant. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has declined your SASSA SRD application approval. Reasons behind this rejection can vary, and that is why you need to read about our declined status on our dedicated page.
SASSA Status Check Failed (Identity Verification Failed)
This SASSA status shows that your SASSA SRD application has failed to pass the identity verification. There must be an issue with your identity documents so that SASSA has stopped your grant payment. To solve this issue, you must visit the nearest SASSA office and ask for help.
Income Source Identified
SASSA offers the social grant only to those who are either unemployed or earning less than R624 per month. So this SASSA status shows that the applicant is earning more than R624. Your bank account is detected with a monthly salary receipt.
Self-Exclusion Response
This is a status check response from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), indicating that the applicant is not eligible for the payment. The reason for this decision is that the applicant has been identified as earning a regular and sustainable income from other sources. As a result, the applicant does not meet the financial eligibility criteria required for this grant. S
Referred Status
The Referred status indicates that your application has been successfully completed and submitted to the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). It has now been forwarded to the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for further verification. This step is part of the standard application process to confirm your identity and citizenship details before a final decision is made on your eligibility. Please allow time for this verification to be completed.

SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant
The SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant was introduced in May 2020 as an emergency financial support measure by the South African government to assist individuals affected by the economic impact of the COVID-19 lockdown. Launched at the height of the pandemic, the grant aimed to provide temporary relief to millions of unemployed South Africans who had no other source of income.
Initially, the monthly payment was set at R350, offering basic support during a time of widespread job losses and uncertainty. As of now, the SASSA SRD grant amount has been increased to R370 to help keep pace with rising living costs.
The SASSA SRD Grant has become a vital lifeline for approximately 19 million people across the country, helping to alleviate poverty and provide dignity to vulnerable individuals.

How to Lodge an SASSA Appeal for Declined or Failed SASSA Status?
SASSA uses a secure and strict verification system to run the whole grant distribution. That is why SASSA rejects millions of SRD grant applications each month that do not qualify for the approval criterion.
However, those who think that they are eligible but still got a grant decline decision can use the SASSA appeal application. In this way, they can appeal to the Department of Social Development (DSD). If your application status is declined or failed, then you should follow my appeal guide mentioned below.
Step 1: Find the Reason for Declining the Application
Your first task is to go and check SRD status so you can find out the exact reason for the payment decline for the SRD grant. One of the most famous reasons are:
- Identity verification failed
- Income source identified
- Self-Exclusion Response Found
Once you have noted down your reason for failure of the SASSA application, you can proceed to the appeal process.
Step 2: Visit DSD SASSA Appeal Portal
The Department of Social Development (DSD) will accept your appeal and verify your appeal status. You need to visit the DSD appeal portal at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal. Once you land on this page, you can start the appeal application procedure.
Step 3: Lodge the Appeal for SRD Grant
The final step is to lodge the appeal. You need to enter your phone number inside the appeal tool and then get an OTP to verify your phone number. Provide the OTP and fill out the appeal application form.
Choose the reason for the declined status and then submit the appeal request online. You will get a reference number for your appeal case. Get this number for future inquiries.
Don’t forget to check your appeal status. This can take between 30 to 90 days maximum to get a response from DSD.
How to Get SASSA Payment After the Approval?
You need to have a bank account if you want to get the payment via bank deposit. However, if you don’t have a bank account, you can choose other methods like Pick n Pay and Shoprite retail stores to get paid.
Here is the step-by-step guide on how to get the SASSA grant payment.
Get R370 Payment Via Bank Transfer:

SASSA Status Check is Approved, But R370 Payment is Not Received
If your SASSA status is approved but you are still waiting for your R370 payment, don’t worry. Here are possible reasons why you haven’t received your money yet:
Payment Date Not Assigned Yet
Even if your application is approved, SASSA might not have given you a payment date yet. You need to wait for your payment date to show on the status check.
Bank Details Are Wrong or Missing
If your bank account number or payment method is incorrect or not updated, SASSA cannot send the money. Make sure your bank details are correct on the SASSA system.
Delays at the Bank or Post Office
Sometimes banks or post offices take extra time to process the payment. It may take a few days after the payment date to reflect in your account.
SASSA Is Processing Many Payments
SASSA pays millions of people. If they are too busy or the system is slow, your payment might take longer to arrive.
Your Payment Was Reversed
If there was a problem sending your money (like a closed account), the payment may have been sent back to SASSA. You will need to update your details and wait for a new payment date.
Tip: Keep checking your status regularly to see if a payment date has been added.
Why has my SRD Application Failed or been Declined?
SASSA can decline or reject an SRD application if it finds that the application is not fulfilling the eligibility rules. Here are some of the most common reasons that can cancel your grant application.
SASSA cannot Verify Your Identity
SASSA checks your ID with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). If your details don’t match, they can’t approve your application.
You Are Getting a Salary
If money from a job is going into your account, SASSA thinks you are working and earning more than the limit allowed.
You Are Already Getting Another Grant or Financial Help
If you are receiving any other SASSA grant (like a child grant) or financial support from NSFAS or UIF, you may not qualify.
Your Bank Shows Too Much Money
If more than R624 per month is going into your account, SASSA may see you as not needing the R370 grant.
You Are Registered for UIF
If your name is still on the UIF system, even if you’re not getting UIF payments, SASSA may decline your application.
You Did Not Confirm Your Details or Missed the Reapplication
Sometimes you need to reapply or confirm your details every few months. If you miss this step, your application will fail.
You Are a Government Employee or Registered Business Owner
If you are working for the government or have a business in your name, SASSA might think you are not in financial need.
